As a therapist, I have seen firsthand the transformative power of therapy in people's lives. With the rise of technology, therapy has become more accessible through online platforms. While online therapy may seem like a new concept, it has been around for some time now, and it has proven to be just as effective as traditional in-person therapy. In this blog, I will share with you the top truths about online therapy that you should know.
Online therapy truth #1: Online therapy is convenient
One of the most significant advantages of online therapy is convenience. With online therapy, you can access therapy from anywhere, at any time. You don't have to worry about commuting to a therapist's office, taking time off work or school, or rearranging your schedule to fit in therapy. You can access therapy from the comfort of your own home or any other private space with a stable internet connection.
Online therapy truth #2: Online therapy is just as effective as in-person therapy
Online therapy has been shown to be just as effective as traditional in-person therapy. Research studies have found that online therapy is just as effective as face-to-face therapy in treating mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Online therapy can also be just as effective in building a therapeutic relationship between the therapist and the client.
Online therapy truth #3: Online therapy provides access to a wider range of therapists
When you access therapy online, you have access to a broader range of therapists. This is because you are not limited to therapists in your immediate geographic area. You can choose a therapist from anywhere in the state (if Texas passes the Counseling Compact this May, you may have more access to therapists throughout the country), and you can find a therapist who specializes in your specific mental health needs.
Online therapy truth #4: Online therapy is confidential and secure
Online therapy platforms use secure servers to protect your personal information and ensure that your therapy sessions are confidential. You can rest assured that your therapist will maintain the same level of confidentiality online as they would in an in-person session. Some clients even more confident about the confidentiality aspect because they do not have to travel to an office where others may see them.
Online therapy truth #5: Online therapy can be more affordable than traditional therapy
Online therapy can be more affordable than traditional therapy. Online therapists sometimes charge lower rates than in-person therapists because they do not have to rent an office space, and you can save money on travel expenses. Additionally, some insurance companies cover online therapy, making it an even more affordable option for many people. This is changing unfortunately and it is one of the many reasons I have chosen to run a private pay practice (see my Fees or FAQ pages for more explanation).
